What is curettage?
Curettage is the treatment procedure performed for advanced gum problems. People often confuse tartar cleaning with curettage. The difference between tartar cleaning and curettage is this: tartar cleaning is the removal of tartar on the visible surfaces, whereas curettage is the cleaning of an infection that has formed deep within the tooth, that is, one that has begun to approach the tooth root.
How is curettage performed?
If gum inflammation is at an advanced level, curettage is performed. Swelling or bleeding in the gums creates the need for curettage. Before starting the curettage procedure, the dentist performs tartar cleaning. The curettage procedure, which begins with local anaesthesia, continues with small incisions made in the gums. The inflamed parts are cleaned by entering through the gum incisions, and the curettage procedure is completed by closing the incisions. Since the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, the pain felt by the patient is kept to a minimum.
